Skills Evaluation of AS Production

Technical:
Blogging wasn’t problematic however uploading pictures proved to be problematic because the images came up blank and didn’t show.

Camera Skills:
Needed to go for A grade shots instead of standard shots and ought to have done more experimenting as an alternative to sticking with one shot. Most of the camera positions were mediocre and could have been upgraded, specifically the shot following Honey Bear through the street. That also meant that many of our shots didn’t have enough impact and should have used match on action shots more. We had some good shots showing the characters expression but we could have done with some more.

Editing:
The captions we made were very professional and we did investigate titles before we chose the correct one for our film opening. We did encounter some problems with our song The A-Team by Ed Sheeran, we couldn’t use the original version nevertheless we did still use the song. We had Harry playing the piano but it didn’t sound accurate and we could have improved. We were very experimental with the scream at the beginning and I think it had a strong influence right at the start. We didn’t use enough video effects and we might have used more fades and other effects.

Creativity:
The scissors that killed Honey Bear wasn’t the right weapon to use; we could have used a kitchen knife or a machete. The back garden location didn’t work as well as graveyard would have, in addition the voice over wasn’t very original.

Characters:
Shaunagh played Honey Bear really well and really stuck to the role and showed the stereotype well, and because of that you felt very sympathetic towards her. Harry on the other hand portrayed the role as a cold blooded killer really appropriately. Bethan played her role as Honey Bear’s mother well, but the back garden scene didn’t work.

Ideas For Our Final Video

Me and Harry needed to correct some of our mistakes from our Honey Bear video. The framing of our shots weren't as good as they could have been, such as the doorway shot were Shaunagh walks through. This is because the shot lingered for too long and it showed to much of the door and not enough of Shaunagh. Also we need to demonstrate uses of extreme close ups, like when Harry is holding the scissors into Shaunagh's body.

Final Cut Feedback

We had some certain points to improve on our final cut. The framing of our shots are all fine but the use of the extreme close ups makes it really dramatic and nervous. Our final shot wasnt as strong as it could have so we could make it stronger by using the photo frame at the end. Our editing is also very strong particularly the fade to white when you see Shaunagh change from a prostitute to a normal person.
The use of sound in each of our shots is good bit we can make it better, we have added a loud door slam for when Harry leaves the room where he killed Shaunagh.
We have also been told to change the use of song because Bethan went a bit flat when she was singing the A-team. We have changed it by having Harry play the A-team on the piano in a low note to give it more tension. Because this is copyrighted music we have emailed the company who published the A- Team music.

Our Honey Bear Logo

Me and Harry needed a logo for our film opening Honey Bear which stands out and was similar to the genre of the film, so we decided to create the style ourselves. We made it in Photoshop by writing the title of the film then deciding to use splatters of blood over the title to make it look worn out. We made the colour white and made the  background black for a very dramatic appearance.

Research into Titles

Kidulthood: Kidulthood has very bold white writing with a very dark and gloomy background, also all of the characters are wearing murky and shadowy clothing. Especially Sam (far right) and Trife (third from the left) both of these characters are the protagonist and antagonist which mean they are valuable to the film and that they are hazardous and precarious.

This is England: The This is England title is very different to the Kidulthood title, this is because it looks more like a print. The interesting thing is that it looks like the title had run out of ink and this looks like a metaphor for the film, because of how Shaun is running out of things to do and joins a gang to fill up the empty space. However it doesn't work out and that could be why the title looks very rundown and neglected.

Shank: The Shank title is more similar to Kidulthood than This is England, this could be because Menhaj Huda directed both Shank and Kidulthood.  This title is very clever because it has a man with a knife instead of the 'A', this can be linked to Kidulthood because the 'i' in Kidulthood is in lower case. Red is also important in the titles because it symbolises blood and the word 'shank' basically means to stab someone, and when you get stabbed you release blood.

Green Street: Green Street is a mix of Kidulthood and This is England because it has some dilapidated letters yet there is some bold letters as well. The mob at the bottom clearly shows it is a violent film and again the colour red features showing that it will be a bloody film as well. The four people along the top are not looking happy and are trying to look menacing, plus everything is in black and white except for the title showing the importance of the colour red.

Shifty: Shifty is the most unique title I have selected this is because of the colour of the background, all of the other films have very threatening and sinister colours however Shifty uses a bright yellow. This could show that Green Street, This is England, Kidulthood and Shank are dark throughout but Shifty has some humour and a lighter side. The guy on the left is smiling while the guy on the right is looking more serious, this could illustrate that the guy on the right is in trouble and the guy of the left is either an enemy or a close friend.
